“Implants must be replaced every ten years”
The most persistent myth. Fact: there is no automatic expiration. Implants are replaced for problems, not birthdays. What is true: rupture risk accumulates slowly with implant age, so monitoring intensifies over time, with periodic ultrasound or MRI as advised. A symptom-free, well-monitored implant at year twelve needs surveillance, not surgery. The “ten-year rule” began as a rough counseling shorthand, not a medical requirement.
“Revision is more dangerous than the first surgery”
Revision is more technically demanding (scar tissue, altered anatomy, capsule work), which is exactly why it belongs with surgeons who do it regularly. In experienced hands, safety profiles are well established, and staged planning manages the added complexity. The real risk multiplier is not revision itself but hasty revision: operating too early, without records, or with the same plan that failed.
“Hardness, movement or ripples mean emergency surgery”
Capsular contracture grades matter: mild firmness (grades I-II) is often observed, not operated. Slight implant mobility is normal, and visible rippling in thin tissue may be improved without full revision in selected cases. The genuine urgent signs are different: sudden swelling, redness and pain, suspected rupture on imaging, or rapid changes. Those deserve prompt evaluation.
